Hannover profile: The green city full of surprises
Hanover is the capital of Lower Saxony and offers residents and tourists a blend of tradition, modernity, and nature. Although it is often overshadowed by larger cities, Hanover has a lot to offer that goes far beyond its reputation and role as an important trade fair and industrial location. With beautiful gardens, historic buildings, and a vibrant cultural scene, Hanover is a city that you should definitely explore.
The history of Hanover dates back to the 12th century, precisely around the year 1150 when the city was founded. Thanks to its strategically favorable location by the Leine River and along important trade routes, the city grew very quickly, leading Hanover to be granted city rights in 1241, which laid the foundation for its economic and political growth. Over the centuries, the city developed from a small settlement on the banks of the Leine to one of the most significant cities in northern Germany, as we know it today.
In the 17th century, Hanover gained international prominence when it became the residence city of the House of Welf. The Welfs, one of the oldest and most important noble families in Europe, played a central role in European history. The most famous representative of this family was King George I, who ascended to the throne as King of Great Britain in 1714. This led to Hanover maintaining a close connection with the British royal family for a time.
World War II plunged many parts of Germany into chaos, including Hanover, whose city center lay in ruins to 90 percent. However, the residents were determined not to let this be their legacy and gave their all in the 1950s to rebuild the city. Modern buildings and improved infrastructure emerged, without completely forgetting the historical roots. Many of the old half-timbered houses in the old town were accurately reconstructed.
